Description
Unlike most trees which are slow growing, bamboo can reach its full height in just one year and reach fullmaturity within four. Furthermore where traditional harvesting kills the tree, the harvesting of individual bamboo culms only serves to further stimulate increased growth, enabling bamboo to produce up to twenty times more timber per hectare than a single rotation of common plantation trees. This rate of growth means that bamboo not only produces high volumes of timber, but also that it directly helps reduce global dependance on unsustainable sources of timber whilst directly reducing the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
As a result its demand around the world is well established and rapidly growing. The wood has a higher tensile strength than steel and therefore enjoys a wide array of applications in the construction industry. Anything that can be made from traditional timber can be made more sustainably from bamboo, so there are large opportunities in areas such as flooring and furniture. Unlike other timbers however, bamboo also has diverse applications in areas such as clothing, food, cosmetics, medicine, green charcoal and fuel.
Location
Our current plantations are located in Rama in close proximity to the Rama port which offers excellent sea access to the key export market of the United States. The plantation was selected upon the following criteria;
> Ideal soil and climate conditions for the growth of bamboo
> Degraded land that will benefit from reforestation
> Social impact; providing employment and social returns in an area of need
> Accessibility; close to a major port, minimising the cost and environmental impact of transportation
Our nursery is producing viable seedlings from our precious stock of bamboo seeds. As Gangustifolia Bamboo only flowers once every 80 to 100 years, the seeds are a rare and valuable commodity which we have accumulated, stored and planted ready for germination and eventual transportation to our main plantation.
